Linux for Everyone

"Making Linux Work for You"

More people would be using Linux instead of Windows if they only knew about it!

Welcome

Many people these days are hearing more about the Linux operating system as an alternative to Windows and Mac. This site will try to clear away all the misconceptions and give you factual information.

This site was created to help non-techie individuals decipher all the information about which Linux distros (brands) to use, what matters and what's optional.

These days there is so much verbiage flying around about Linux, that it confuses most people. I've read articles by so-called experts that use all the cliche stereotypes about Linux is only for techie people which is no more true than saying that Windows is only for techie people. I'm not that "techie" a person myself. I'm just curious and like to experiment with different operating systems. One of the great things about certain Linux distros is that they have very useful forums to ask questions and learn from.

It's unfortunate that Microsoft is treated like it is the only OS around. At this point, many people know that it is not the best way to run a computer. Apple (Mac) puts out an excellent operating system, but it is more expensive to purchase and make changes to. This is where Linux comes in. Since both Linux and Mac are based on the Unix operating system, they are both safer and more stable than Windows, especially when on the Internet.

What's a Distro?

Every brand of Linux is called a distribution, alias "distro." A distro is the Linux core operating system plus a collection of software programs that make it a brand.

Some of the most popular Linux distros are:

  • Ubuntu
  • Mandriva
  • Linux Mint
  • openSUSE
  • Fedora
  • PCLinuxOS

There are over a hundred distros listed on Distrowatch.com...but don't let that confuse you. They are all based on the same Linux core operating system. For first time users: Linux Mint is one of the most complete out-of-the-box distros that can have you up and running within 30 minutes!
